NICOLAS DE JESUS - SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST

Nic De Jesus is a South African artist, b. 1984, working across drawing, painting, and photography. His practice is rooted in sustained and repeated return to the West Coast of South Africa, a landscape he visits daily, on foot, in the water, and in the studio.

Across oil painting, liquid charcoal on paper, pastel and charcoal drawings, and photographic diptychs, De Jesus employs a process of layering and release in the painted and drawn work. In paired photographs, he holds two moments in correspondence. His four bodies of work each approach the same terrain through different means.

The coast is the site through which he works, and what the work attends to is not the landscape itself but what it opens onto.
